China Host to More than 800 Million Netizens, Over 70% Aged 10 – 39

The number of internet users in China swelled to over 800  million by the end of the first half of this year, with young people comprising the vast majority of this expanding demographic.

As of the end of June 2018 China was host to roughly 802 million internet users, for an increase during the first half of 29.68 million people and a rise of 3.8% compared to the end of 2017 according to a new report from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

According to CNNIC’s “China Internet Development Statistical Report” (中国互联网络发展状况统计报告) the number of mobile internet users hit 788 million people during the same period, with the proportion of internet users using mobile devices to access the internet rising to 98.3%.

China’s internet penetration rate reached 57.7% at the end of the first half.

The report further indicates that younger people comprise the mainstay of China’s internet-using demographic, with people from the ages of 10 to 39 accounting for 70.8% of all Chinese internet users, and people from the ages of 20 to 29 accounting for 27.9%.

People from the ages of 30 to 49 saw their share of Chinese internet using population expand to 39.9% from 36.7% at the end of 2017.
