Mobile Payments Users in China Rise over 10% in 2018 to Hit 583 Million, Online Payments Users Reach 600 Million

A new report points to surging growth in China’s mobile payments and online payments markets in 2018.

The number of mobile payments users in China saw a 10.7% YoY increase in 2018 to reach 583 million, according to a report from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

The number of online payments users saw a 13% YoY increase to reach approximately 600 million people, while the total number of internet users in China saw a 7.3% increase in 2018 to reach 829 million.

The number of Chinese consumers ordering food online saw an 18.2% increase to reach 406 million, while consumers filing food orders via their mobile devices saw a 23.2% rise to hit 397 million.

Chinese consumers are also making increasing use of mobile wallets for offline purchases. Around 67.2% of Chinese netizens make use of mobile payments when offline shopping, for an increase of 65.2% compared to 2017.
