The latest official data indicates that China is on track to dramatically increase the number of 5G base stations in the country in 2020.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said on 31 March that it plans to accelerate the development of 5G network infrastructure this year, and increase the number of 5G base stations in China to over 600,000 before the end of 2020.
According to MIIT the move will achieve continuous outdoors coverage in all prefecture-level cities.
As of the end of February China had built a total of 164,000 5G base stations, while as of 26 March it was host to over 26 million 5G mobile phone units across 76 different product types.
