Beijing Officially Unveils Artificial Intelligence Industry Alliance in Zhongguancun

China has just seen the launch of a new artificial intelligence industry association in Beijing’s hi-tech hub of Zhongguancun.

The official sign for the “Zhongguancun Digital Intelligence Artificial Intelligence Industry League” (中关村数智人工智能产业联盟) was unveiled in Zhongguancun on 28 August, after obtaining approval for establishment from the Zhongguancun Administrative Committee.

The League was founded by a group of Chinese tech companies including Xiaomi and Megvii, for the purpose of expediting the development of the artificial intelligence sector in Beijing and Zhongguancun, and providing “vigorous support to its rapid development.”

The League has already established a total of eight specialist committees covering digital persons, the logistics sector, digital transformation, unmanned vehicles, smart parks, optical technology, full media applications and XR, as well as established its an AI research centre.

Zhongguancun has recently emerged as a leading regional hub for the AI sector, after obtaining approval for the launch of China’s first state next-generation artificial intelligence development testing zone (国家新一代人工智能创新发展试验区), to “bring together outstanding AI enterprises and innovation resources.

In 2019 Zhongguancun’s AI industry output was worth around 170 billion yuan (approx. USD$24.82 billion), for a YoY rise of 13.3%.
