China’s Telecoms Sector Posted 76.4% YoY Growth in 2017

The latest official data points to surging growth in China’s telecommunications sector in 2017.

Speaking at the 2017 Industrial Telecommunications Sector Growth Briefing held by the State Council’s Information Office on 30 January, Miao Xu (苗圩), head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that in 2017 China took major strides towards becoming a leading Internet nation by driving increases in connection speeds and reductions in fees.

China’s mobile user consumption rate was 2.69GB/user/month in December, for a 2.5 fold increase compared to the same period last year.

The total business volume of the telecoms sector posted a year-on-year increase of 76.4% i 2017, while the telecoms business revenues of key telecoms companies posted a YoY gain of 6.4%, and Internet and related service revenues saw an on-year increase of 20.8%.

The number of 4G users in China reached 997 million by the end of 2017, accounting for 70.3% of the country’s total mobile users.

The percentage of Internet users with fixed broadband connections at speeds of greater than 50Mbps rose to around 70%.
