Chinese Banking Sector Continues to Post Balance Sheet Expansion in April

The latest official data points to ongoing year-on-year gains in the balance sheets of the Chinese banking sector driven by growth in liabilities.

Figures from the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) indicate that Chinese banks had total assets of 248.6 trillion yuan (approx. USD$38.9 trillion) as of the end of April, for a YoY increase of 7.2%.

Total liabilities posted a 6.8% YoY increase, rising to 228.5 trillion yuan.

Chinese commercial banks had total assets of 192.4 trillion yuan, for a YoY rise of 6.4%, while their liabilities saw a 6% rise to 177.2 trillion yuan.
