China’s Ministry of Transport (MOT) says that the total length of the country’s high-speed rail routes will reach 30,000 kilometres by the end of the decade.

According to MOT’s latest three year plan covering the period from 2018 to 2020 (交通运输服务决胜全面建成小康社会开启全面建设社会主义现代化国家新征程三年行动计划(2018-2020年)), the 30,000 kilometres of high-speed rail will cover over 80% of cities with permanent populations in excess of 1 million.

The total length of China’s freeways is set to rise to 150,000 kilometres by 2020, covering all cities and administrative centres with populations in excess of 200,000, while civil aviation airports will also cover all Chinese cities with permanent populations in excess of 200,000.
