One of China’s big four state-owned banks plans to trial the use of biometric payments on trams in the Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park in Shanghai’s Pudong district.

At the Jiantan – 2019 Shanghai Innovation Forum (“建谈·2019上海创新论坛) executives from China Construction Bank (CCB) told local reporters that its Shanghai branch was driving the deployment of innovative payment methods in the city.

In addition to hotels and markets, CCB’s Shanghai branch also hopes to soon introduce the use of facial scan payments to trams operating in the Zhangjiang Hi Tech Park.

CCB’s Shanghai branch took the lead in launching facial scan payments last year, enabling consumers in the city to make “non-touch payments” based solely on biometric information.

Facial scan payments are currently used at a range of businesses and retail outlets in Shanghai, including the Xinhua Bookstore at the Grand Gateway Shanghai, the Xuhui Pacific Department Store and the Radisson Blu Hotel.
