Chinese payments giant UnionPay is trialling the use of facial scan devices at selected educational institutions in the north of China.

Tianjin Modern Vocational Technical College (天津现代职业技术学院) recently became the first educational institution where UnionPay is trialling the biometric technology.

The new facial scan devices allow both students and teachers to pass through the entrance turnstiles of the school, as well as make payments for food and beverages in the canteen.

China UnionPay is also providing digital campus solution plans to around a dozen other educational institutions in the Tianjin area including Tianjin Normal University (天津师范大学) and Tianjin Physical Education College (天津体育学院).

UnionPay plans to launch facial scan payments technology at seven of these educational institutions, including Tianjin Chengjian University, Tianjin University of Technology and the Hebei University of Technology.

The payments giant has entered collaborations with 1259 tertiary institutions throughout China, and is providing digital campus solution plans to colleges including Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Jimei University, Northwest University, Hubei University of Technology, Inner Mongolia University and Jiangxi University of Science and Technology.
