The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has announced the launch of its own public account on China’s leading social media app.

On 2 August PBOC governor Yi Gang (易纲) announced the launch of the Chinese central bank’s WeChat public account in an official letter addressed to the public.

“The opening of the WeChat account is a new attempt and a new exploration of strengthening PBOC’s communications with the public,” Yi wrote.

“We will use this public account to release official information, interpret financial policy, explain financial information, as well as help everyone to more conveniently understanding the work of PBOC, and submit various opinions and recommendations on our work.

“In future, we will continue to enrich and improve PBOC’s methods for communicating with the public, and continually raise the level of transparency and credibility of PBOC’s various policies.”

Tencent’s WeChat is one of the world’s most popular social media apps, with registered users exceeding the one billion mark in 2018.
