Over 2100 Foreign Institutional Investors on China’s Interbank Bond Market

Official data indicates that over 2110 foreign institutional investors have made their way onto China’s interbank bond market.

Data from the China Foreign Exchange Trade System indicates that as of August 2019 there were a total of 2114 foreign institutional investors that had entered the Chinese interbank bond market.

988 had entered the market via a settlement agency model, for an increase of 214 compared to the end of last year, while 1244 had entered the market the Bond Connect scheme, for a rise of 741 compared to the end of last year.

118 foreign institutional investors participate in China’s interbank bond market via both channels.

Foreign institutional investors concluded 624.1 billion yuan in transactions in August, for an on-month transaction volume rise of 43%, and a YoY rise of 63%.

Transactions by foreign institutional investors accounted for 3% of spot market transactions in August, with 347.0 billion yuan in purchases and 277.1 billion in sales, for net purchases of 69.9 billion yuan.
