China’s food delivery market has seen roaring growth over the past several years as the country’s Internet economy has expanded, with the COVID-19 pandemic serving as an especially strong spur to recent growth.

The “2019 and 2020 First Half China Food Home Delivery Sector Development Report” (2019年及2020年上半年中国外卖产业发展报告) forecasts that in 2020 online home food delivery will account for a more than 20% share of the entire food and beverage market in China.

The Report was jointly released by the China Hospitality Association and Meituan-Dianping.

A survey conducted by Meituan in April found that nearly 80% of Chinese food and beverage vendors currently can or are about to provide home delivery services. China is currently host to approximately 9 million food and beverage businesses.

Figures from iResearch Consulting Group indicate that in 2019 China’s food and beverage home delivery sector was 653.6 billion yuan, for a 39.3% rise compared to 2018.

As of the end of 2019 China had 900 million Internet users, of whom 460 million were food home delivery consumers, for a YoY rise of 12.7%.
