PBOC Launches Fintech Research Centre, Calls for “Comprehensive Increase” in China’s Fintech Competitiveness and Influence

A senior official from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has called for the country to further drive efforts for the development of the Chinese fintech sector following the establishment of a new fintech research wing.

At a ceremony held in Beijing on 21 October Zhejiang University officially became one of the founding members of PBOC’s Fintech Research Centre (人民银行金融科技研究中心) following a period of long-term cooperation between the two entities.

The PBOC Fintech Research Centre is categorised as a fintech research institute established by the Chinese central bank, whose purpose is to undertake research tasks for PBOC’s fintech commission, track the latest domestic and overseas fintech development trends, undertake theoretical and applied research in the fintech sphere, and expedite the commercialisation of fintech research results.

Fan Yifei (范一飞), PBOC deputy governor, said that the Research Centre would also have the purpose of “cultivating international calibre fintech talent, and comprehensively increasing the competitiveness and influence of Chinese fintech.”
