Online Retail Sales in China for First Four Months of 2021 Surge over 27% to Exceed 3.7 Trillion Yuan

Chinese e-commerce has seen surging growth since the start of 2021, as consumer activity continues to recover from the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the period from January to April 2021 China saw online sales of 3.7638 trillion yuan (approx. USD$584.58 billion), for growth of 27.6% compared to the same period in 2020, as well as an average annual growth rate of 13.9% for the past two years, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on 17 May.

Online retail sales of physical commercial goods totalled 3.0774 trillion yuan, for YoY growth of 23.1%, and an average annual growth rate of 15.6% over the past two years. This sales amount accounted for a 22.2% share of all retail sales of social consumer goods.
