The Beijing Subway has commenced the acceptance of Digital Renminbi for payments via the use of bank-provided digital wallets and personal smart devices.

The Beijing Subway launched trials for the use of Digital Renminbi payments at the turnstiles of stations situated on all 24 underground lines and four suburban rail lines on 30 June, according to a statement made by local transit authorities.

Under the trials passengers with ICBC Digital Renminbi wallets will be able to use China’s new central bank digital currency to make payments via the Yitongxing (亿通行) app.

The move comes after Beijing trialled the use of the Digital Renminbi for payments via wearable devices at selected subway stations in the city starting from 29 December 2020, as part of efforts to incorporate the use of the central bank digital currency into Winter Olympics facilities.
