A new white paper on China’s cloud computing sector from one of the country’s leading science and technology think tanks indicates that the market saw explosive growth in 2020.

China’s cloud computing market posted YoY growth of 56.6% to hit 209.1 billion yuan (approx. USD$32.11 billion) in 2020, according to the “2021 Cloud Computing White Paper” (云计算白皮书) released on 27 July by the China Academy of Information and Communication Technologies (CAICT).

CAICT said that growth of the cloud computing market in China exceeded global growth due to strong domestic demand.

Chen Jiachun (陈家春), an official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said that cloud computing was still at an incipient stage of development in China as recently as the 12th Five Year Plan (2011 – 2015), during which the size of the market was just 1 billion yuan.

Since then China’s cloud computing market has seen continual rapid expansion, with average per annum growth of more than 50%.
