The financial hub of Shanghai has launched trials for the use of the Chinese central bank digital currency – also commonly referred to as the digital renminbi, to make payments for fares when riding taxis.

Shanghai taxi operator QiangSheng (强生出租车) has equipped all of its nearly 6000 clean energy taxi vehicles with digital renminbi payments capabilities.

When customers reach their destinations they now have the option of making payments with the driver’s “smart terminal” by opening up their digital renminbi apps and scanning the standard QR codes long employed by WeChat Pay and Alipay.

QiangSheng said that the introduction of digital renminbi payments in addition to the established digital payments channels of WeChat Pay and Alipay would serve to diversify options for customers in Shanghai and bring them greater convenience.
