Tech giant Tencent has committed to greater integration of its payment ecosystem with China UnionPay.

On 30 September Tencent announced via its official WeChat account that it would “drive more in-depth connection with UnionPay Quick Pass in the areas of payments and services.”

This will include integration of QR barcodes, enabling users throughout China to use the UnionPay Quick Pass app to scan WeChat barcodes for the completion of payments.

The WeChat app will also gradually support UnionPay Quick Pass payments, with testing having already kicked off on 22 September. The initial stage of integration will involve apps including WeChat Reader, Tencent Video, Maoyan, JD and BBK.

The move coincides with Alibaba’s incorporation of WeChat Pay and other payments options into its ecosystem of apps, including Ele.me, Youku, Damai, Kaola, Shuqi, Taote, Xianyu and Hema, in response to China’s anti-trust campaign targeting Internet platforms.
