Lenders in the Chinese financial hub of Shanghai are resuming operation for the first time since the re-imposition of strict Covid-19 lockdowns at the start of April.

Shanghai Rural Commercial Bank’s (SRCB) Zhujing branch in the Jinshan district of Shanghai has resumed the provision of external services as of 12 May, according to a report from state-owned media.

SRCB is believed to be the first bank in Shanghai to resume operation since the new round of Covid-19 lockdowns were imposed.

The bank said that it selected the Zhujing branch in order to best cater to the counter service needs of Shanghai residents, and has restored personal banking operations.

“The branch will continue to operate following opening, so customers do not need to be concerned about their inability to access services or perform withdrawals,” said an SRCB spokesperson.
