China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has led the launch of a new campaign to increase the usage of electric vehicles (EV) in rural parts of the country.

MIIT said on 31 May that it had teamed up with the Ministry of Commerce and the National Energy Administration to issue an official notice that would kick off an initiative to bring more clean energy vehicles to the rural countryside in 2022.

MIIT said it would work with other authorities to support EV consumption, guide rural village residents in pursuing green transportation, and advance efforts to achieve China’s peak carbon and carbon neutrality targets.

The campaign will run from May to December, and involve promotional activities in third and fourth-tier cities in Chinese provinces including Shanxi, Jilin, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Henan, Shandong, Hubei, Hunan, Hainan, Sichuan and Gansu.
