China’s artificial intelligence (AI) sector continues to see robust growth, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

China’s core AI industry scale currently exceeds 400 billion yuan, while the number of enterprises in the sector is over 3,000, according to data released on 24 June by MIIT deputy minister Xiao Yaqing (肖亚庆).

“China’s smart chips, open source frameworks and other key technologies have obtained major breakthroughs, and landmark innovative capabilities continue to increase in areas including smart sensors and smart network-connected cars,” said Xiao at a state-run press conference.

“We have built 1.7 million 5G bases, and are cultivating 150 large-scale Industrial Internet of Things platforms, connected to over 78 million industrial devices.

“AI is rapidly being integrated with manufacturing, transit, healthcare, daily life and other areas, and continually creating new modes, new models, and new markets, which is vigorously driving the digitisation and smart transformation of all sectors.”
