State Council Appoints New Deputy Governor to Chinese Central Bank

The State Council has appointed the former head of one of the big state-owned banks to the position of deputy governor of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC).

On 6 September the Chinese central government announced the appointment of Zhang Qingsong (张青松) as PBOC deputy-governor.

57 year-old Zhang holds a PhD in economics from the research department of PBOC. In November 2019 Zhang was appointed president of Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), and in January 2022 he was appointed the bank’s deputy chairman.

Zhang previously spent much of his career at Bank of China (PBOC), where he held positions including global financial markets supervisor, financial markets chief department supervisor, head of BOC’s Hong Kong trading centre and head of BOC’s Singapore branch.

In August 2018 Zhang was appointed vice-president and executive director of BOC, and in December 2018 he was appointed president of policy lender Export-Import Bank of China.
