One of China’s leading think tanks has highlighted the emergence of green finance as a key strategic imperative for Beijing.

Yang Tao (杨涛), researcher from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) writes that the growth of green finance has become a “key component of national strategy” following the launch by Beijing in 2020 of the twin carbon mitigation targets of peak carbon by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.

“Green finance is increasingly used for ‘targeted positioning’ to support industries and sectors that are in consonance with green, low-carbon development,” Yang wrote in an opinion piece for 21st Century Business Herald.

“This enables them to obtain guarantees for financial resources and opens up new oceans for the financial sector.”
