China’s Big Data Sector Posts 18% Growth in 2022

China’s big data sector saw solid double-digit growth in 2022, as Chinese regulators push for rapid development of the country’s digital economy.

The scale of China’s big data industry hit 1.57 trillion yuan in 2022, for a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 18% year-on-year, according to figure released at the recent 2023 China International Big Data Industry Expo.

“[Big data] will become an important force to promote the development of the digital economy,” said a report from the People’s Daily – the flagship newspaper of the Communist Party of China (CCP).

“The big data sector is a strategic emerging sector and a key support for stimulating the potential of data as a factor of production, and an important driver for accelerating the quality and efficiency improvements in socio-economic development.”

An official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said that the next step will be to accelerate the development of 5G and gigabit optical networks, comprehensively promote the research and development of 6G technology, deepen the large-scale development , deployment and application of IPv6; promote the construction of national integrated big data centre hub nodes, and consolidate the foundations for the development of the big data sector.

MIIT will also encourage enterprises of all types of to participate in the development of China’s market for data as a factor of production; promote the deep integration of big data with various industries, and fully employ the multiplier and multiplication effects of big data in the Chinese economy.
