Alibaba has topped a new list of China’s top 100 companies in terms of Internet reach and capability.
The Internet Society of China released the “China Internet Enterprise Comprehensive Strength Research Report (2020)” (中国互联网企业综合实力研究报告（2020）) on 29 October in Beijing.
Song Mao’en (宋茂恩), deputy secretary of the Internet Society of China, said that China’s online tech sector had posted a strong performance since the start of 2020 despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the broader economy.
Song said that the combined operating revenues of China’s top 100 Internet enterprises in 2020 had “reached a historic high,” with Internet business revenues tapping 3.5 trillion yuan for an increase of 28.2% compared to the same period last year.
R&D expenditures were 177.2 billion yuan, for an increase of 15.2% compared to the same period last year, while tax payments and staff numbers of China’s top 100 Internet companies saw increases of 20.6% and 18.3% respectively.
The Internet Society of China’s top 100 list of China’s leading enterprises in terms of “comprehensive Internet strength” indicates that Alibaba leads the pack in 2020, followed by Tencent, Meituan, Baidu and JD.com.
