Chinese Grain Production Rises 0.9% in 2020 to 669.49 Million Tonnes

Grain production in China edged higher in 2020 despite the adverse economic impact of COVID-19.

Chinese grain production was 669.49 million tonnes in 2020, for a YoY rise of 5.65 million tonnes, or 0.9%, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on 28 February.

In 2020 the grain planting area was 116.77 million hectares, for an increase compared to the previous year of 700,000 hectares.

This included a rice planting area of 30.08 million hectares, for an increase 380,000 hectares, while the wheat planting area was 23.38 million hectares, for a reduction 350,000 hectares and the maize planting area was 41.26 million hectares, for a reduction 20,000 hectares.

The cotton planting area was 3.17 million hectares, for a decline of 170,000 hectares, the oil planting area was 13.13 million hectares, for an increase of 200,000 hectares, and the sugar planting area was 15.7 million hectares, for a reduction 40,000 hectares.
