China claims to be host to the overwhelming majority of the world’s base stations and terminal connections when it comes to 5G telecommunications technology.

As of the end of March China had built approximately 819,000 5G base stations, accounting for over 70% of the global total, according to figures released by Liu Liehong (刘烈宏), deputy-head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), on 17 May as part of World Information Society Day 2021.

MIIT data further indicates that the number of 5G connected terminals in China is approximately 280 million, accounting for over 80% of the global total.

MIIT said that China lays claim to two of the world’s top telecom equipment companies in terms of share of market revenue in 2020 – Huawei, which had a 31% share, and ZTE, which came in fourth with a 10% share.
