China’s Top Economic Architect Reiterates Support for the Growth of Private Enterprise

The man considered one of China’s chief architects of economic policy has stressed the central government’s commitment to supporting the growth of the private sector.

Chinese vice-premier Liu He (刘鹤) said that China must “vigorously support the growth of the private economy, and enable its to play an even greater role in stabilising growth, stabilising employment, making structural adjustments and driving innovation.”

Liu made the remarks on 6 September, at the opening of the 2021 China International Digital Economic Expo held in the Hebei province city of Shijiazhuang.

“The general policy of supporting the development of the private economy has not changed,” said Liu. “It hasn’t changed now, and it will not change in future!”

Dong Ximiao (董希淼), chief researcher with China Merchant Securities, said to Yicai that the speech served to reiterate China’s “firm determination to vigorously supporting the growth of the private economy, and will help to further stabilise the confidence and expectations of private enterprise and private entrepreneurs.”

“[It] will further drive the healthy growth of the private economy, making an even greater contribution to servicing China’s high-quality economic growth, and achieving common prosperity.”
