China’s Mobile Internet of Things Connections Hit 1.698 Billion, Exceeds Mobile Phone Users

Official data points to a sharp increase in the number of devices connected to China’s mobile Internet of Things (IoT).

According to figures released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on 21 September, as of the end of August China was host to 1.698 billion devices connected to the mobile IoT, surpassing the number of connected mobile phones for the first time on record.

MIIT defines mobile IoT devices as devices connected to the IoT via mobile communications networks, and has highlighted their broad applications in the areas of manufacturing, public services and personal consumption.

Data from MIIT further indicates that as of the end of August China was host to 5.937 million 4G base stations and 2.102 million 5G base stations.
